PART THREE: THE DYSTOPIA IS REAL
|
DRIVING QUESTION: What aspects of our society might be revealed as defective through a dystopian critique?
The Task |
Create your own dystopian society based upon one worrying/unjust trend that you see in our world. Your trend can come from any aspect of your life or the world around you. You will have to “multiply” or exaggerate this trend to create a plausible dystopian society in our own distant future.
Next, determine the steps that could plausibly lead from our current society to the dystopia you have created. Create a thorough and logical list. Then create a citizen who is living in this world. Use this person to lead us through the world you have created. Present your dystopia in the medium(s) of your choice. Find a way to take us through a day in the life of a typical citizen in your society. Examples include filming a documentary or vlog, creating a blog or Tumblr, constructing a scrapbook, creating a 3D model, taking on the role of someone in your society, performing a skit, or any combination of those things. This is your time to get creative, so if you have other ideas, let me know! Finally, determine the steps that our current society needs to take NOW in order to prevent this dystopia from becoming a reality. TIP: Consider the level of detail that the author used in creating the dystopia of your novel. Give as much information as possible to thoroughly explain what makes your society run and how your citizen lives on a daily basis. UNESCO needs as much detail as possible to determine which societal flaw to focus on for the youth forum. TIP: While creativity is encouraged, it is difficult to score. Thus, the level of effort, thought, and detail put forth in this assignment will be primarily assessed. |
Due Date |
Rough Draft: Tuesday, May 2 (be prepared to use the Charrette protocol to give and receive feedback)
Formal Presentations: Thursday, May 4 during your block TIP: The presentations will be in the style of a museum walk. The more you can engage and interact with the audience, the better. Instead of primarily talking TO them, let them EXPERIENCE what life in your dystopia is like. Essentially, take us through "a day in the life." To accomplish this, you will likely need to incorporate multiple presentation elements. |
